Stokes Regional Eye Centers was established in 1938 by Dr. Julius 'Howard' Stokes, Sr., MD. Later joined by his three sons. Dr. Howard continued to provide the tradition of excellence in eye care and his contribution to the community is commemorated at Francis Marion University where the administration building bears his name

His oldest son, Dr. Hunter R. Stokes, Sr., MD is still very active in the community and has two sons in practice at SREC. Dr. J. Howard Stokes, Jr. also retired in the summer of 2001 after providing years of quality care to his patients followed in 2003 by his brother Dr. Parker Stokes.
